Ngong, Kenya | June 11–12, 2026

The global development architecture is undergoing a seismic shift. Shifting bilateral priorities, direct government-to-government agreements, and severe international funding contractions are redefining the traditional non-profit landscape. For civil society organizations across East Africa, operating under a “business-as-usual” mindset is no longer an option. Survival demands a fundamental institutional evolution.

In response to this changing reality, the Consolation East Africa (CEA) team, together with its Board of Directors, corporate business partners, and solidarity peers, gathered in Ngong, Kenya, on June 11 and 12, 2026, for a high-level Strategic Re-Engineering and Evaluation Plenary.

Rather than viewing these global disruptions solely as financial threats, CEA utilized the two-day retreat as an opportunity to proactively re-architect its institutional design. The gathering moved far beyond standard discussions on resource mobilization and grant hunting. Instead, the focus centered on a broader, more holistic vision: strengthening long-term organizational sustainability while sharpening the depth and impact of our program delivery.

Over the course of the two days, participants examined how to bridge market-facing strategies with core social values:

• Embracing a Social Enterprise Approach: Transitioning from passive aid dependency toward agile, market-driven models—including commercialized consultancies, packaged capacity-building services, and scalable community enterprises.
• Deepening Programmatic Impact: Ensuring that institutional realignments directly translate to better, more measurable outcomes on the ground, particularly for hidden and deeply marginalized populations who rely on our interventions.
• Building Relationships Beyond Funding Cycles: Shifting from short-term, transactional grant relationships toward long-term strategic alliances, system integration partnerships, and corporate collaborations.
• Internal Structural Readiness: Aligning staff capacities, workflow architectures, and performance management frameworks to support a modern, highly responsive civil society organization.

Coming together as a unified team on Day 1 alongside external stakeholders, and reflecting deeply on internal operational dynamics during Day 2, CEA established a clear roadmap for the future.

As the regional development context continues to evolve, Consolation East Africa emerges from this strategic retreat repositioned, resilient, and ready—not merely to survive the changing environment, but to lead with sustainable, high-impact solutions for the communities we serve.
