Consolation East Africa participated in a stakeholder engagement meeting convened by ActionAid International Kenya at Enchula Resort, Kajiado County, as ActionAid prepares to phase out its direct implementation in Elangata Wuas after 15 years of community engagement.The meeting brought together representatives from the National and County Governments, civil society organizations, community representatives and other stakeholders. ActionAid shared its end-term report and phase-out strategy, highlighting key achievements, remaining community needs and opportunities for partners to sustain the gains made.

A key area of discussion was the VLA Women Group, comprising approximately 500 members across 60 groups. The group has been supported to strengthen savings and access to loans, while also exploring livelihood opportunities such as poultry farming. However, challenges around technical knowledge have affected the sustainability of some initiatives.

Opportunity to build on existing community structures

For Consolation East Africa, the engagement presented opportunities to build on existing community structures through its Agribiz Initiative, particularly by providing practical knowledge and mentorship on poultry and passion-fruit production. There is also potential to support young people through agribusiness mentorship and entrepreneurship training, including the use of Consolation’s Business Games.

The continued need for GBV prevention, awareness, mentorship and referral support was also identified as an important area for potential collaboration with government and community stakeholders.

The engagement reaffirmed the importance of partnership, local ownership and continuity in sustaining development gains. Consolation East Africa looks forward to exploring opportunities to work with ActionAid, government institutions, communities and other partners to contribute to sustainable livelihoods, youth empowerment and protection in Elangata Wuas.
