World Day Against Trafficking in Persons (WDATiP), is usually marked every year on the 30th of July. But the Kenya national event will be taking place on 28th July under the auspices of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection’s Counter Trafficking in Persons (CTIP) Department. Consolation, Inspire Teenage Foundation and the Kajiado North MCA office joined other concerned CSOs, corporates and other institutions to create awareness and other build -Up events towards the national day.
The theme of this year’s World Day against Human Trafficking is “reach every victim of human trafficking, leave no one behind.” It’s in line with this vision that the organizers will be inviting participants to reflect on the unseen victims in their own locality that may warrant no attention yet they vividly suffer from the scourge of human trafficking. The call to leave no one behind means that we have to start strategizing on the last mile victims.
A few cases of Human Trafficking and Abuse have been reported within the sub-county, majority of cases have been found to mostly involve young women and girls, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds and those with less or no access to right information, ending up being lured into false employment contracts, through unscrupulous agents, just to end up falling victims of Human trafficking.
This event looked at creating awareness about human trafficking, strengthening prevention activities, and discussing community responsibility towards reintegration. Part of the discussion was on the use of technology in fighting modern day slavery.
By building capacities of grassroots communities, organizers hope that case identification and case management systems and documentation for victims of human trafficking within the sub-county will improve.
Objectives of the event was to:
● To create awareness to the community on Human trafficking
● Discuss about the experience of participants with human trafficking in their localities ● Develop a local network that will assist in countering human trafficking within the locality
● Develop a collaborative action plan to strengthen case management and documentation within the sub-county
