Rio de Janeiro, Brazil | 2026 International AIDS Conference
After weeks of conversations, designing, drawing and stitching in Kenya, the Community Quilt arrived in Rio carrying more than fabric. It carried stories, community voices and a shared message: HIV Funding Saves Lives.
The quilt was officially launched during a GADH engagement at the 2026 International AIDS Conference, bringing together community members, advocates and partners both physically and online. The launch celebrated the collective effort behind the quilt and the communities whose voices shaped its message.
But the launch was only the beginning.

Following the launch, the quilt was placed at the AVAC booth in the Global Village, where it became part of a continuous engagement throughout the conference. Rather than being displayed simply as an artwork, the quilt invited people to come closer, learn about its message, sign their names and leave their own messages of solidarity.
Day after day, conference participants gathered around it. People from different countries, communities and organisations added their signatures, creating a growing visual expression of solidarity around the HIV Funding Saves Lives campaign.

For CEA and GADH, this was an important part of the quilt’s purpose. The quilt was created to bring community voices together, and every new signature added another voice to the collective call to protect HIV financing and the progress made in the HIV response.
The quilt’s message reflects three interconnected realities: a past we refuse to return to, the recognition that HIV funding saves lives, and a future worth funding. It reminds us that behind every statistic is a person, and behind every advocacy message are communities whose lives are directly affected by funding decisions.
What began at the CEA offices in Kenya had now become a shared community statement in Rio.

The quilt continues its journey beyond the conference, with plans for it to travel to other engagements and create more opportunities for communities, advocates and partners to add their voices.
Every signature tells a story. Every stitch represents a voice. Together, they carry one message: HIV Funding Saves Lives.
